Off Camera Flash…Huh????

Several years ago when I started in photography I was primarily concerned with lighting some LARGE and DARK areas in underground mines, such as these images here. I absolutely love using these small flash units with some fancy radio triggers, their portability and ease of use really suit my style of shooting.

I have started working more and more with these flashes in a more “normal” enviroment than 800 feet underground. They allow you to really control the lighting including the abilty to get some pretty dramatic images, such as this shot of my son Shannon. This image was made at 7:45 PM with 2 small flashes on either side of him. No real photoshop work here, just cropped and warmed up the sky color just a tad (the sun is 100% natural). Stay tuned for more, I hope to really use this technique quite a bit over the next few weeks. I’ll probably be looking for a “bride” to perfect this lighting with, so if you’re interested in some awesome and dramatic images in your wedding dress we need to talk :)

  1. Awesome work! I’m sure he loved this portrait, and you were so lucky to get such a wonderful sunset!

  2. Randy, OCF is a great thing. I’m constantly amazed at the images one can get. You did great with the sun flare here – this must have been a tricky shot.
